Visual tool to survey aspects of image quality

Category: Software/GUI
Scope: 2 students completing 30 credits (20 weeks) each

Background
It is hard to define what is meant by a good image. One problem is the range of opinions among camera users. What makes a specific image good? Some would say sharpness, others clear colors and yet others low noise. Subjective image quality is hard to measure, however, one way of doing this is to have a survey done utilizing images. This survey needs a tool to show images with quality specific characteristics so the participants can make a fair judgment.

Goals
The visual tool, that is to be developed, is intended for a future survey of what people think image quality is. The focus of the thesis will be:

  • to solve the problem of that this tool will be used on different monitors,
  • to analyze the ability to show image information with different types of limitations,
  • to choose a reasonable amount of images and questions, and
  • the simplicity of the tool. The GUI must be suitable for a range of different people.

The master thesis may also be ended with a small survey among either Axis employees or another reference group as a test. Students with knowledge and interest within images and cognitive science are encouraged to apply.
